Before you buy
Private hire (minicab, Uber) covers pre-booked journeys only. Public hire (hackney) lets you pick up fares on the street. You must have the right licence for the cover type.
Third party only is the legal minimum. Third party, fire & theft adds protection against theft. Comprehensive covers damage to your own vehicle too — recommended for taxi drivers.
Build up a no-claims bonus, add security devices, pay annually instead of monthly, and choose an EV — all can meaningfully lower what you pay each year.
Adding a second named driver can raise or lower your premium depending on their record. Fleet policies covering 5+ vehicles often save significantly over individual policies.
